Wow--what a weekend. Notacon, in its 5th iteration, has yet to disappoint me. Thank you so very much from everyone that came and participated in making Notacon what it is. Everyone was (mostly) well-behaved and the hotel staff didn't throw any thing at me. So Kudos.

I hope that our level of service was second to none BUT in the event that it was I would like you all to let me know what we can do better next year.

This is the thread to do that in.

Please post ANY thoughts you have no matter HOW minuscule on what we can do to make it a better conference for all involved parties and I will personally make sure that we address all issues at the next core staff meeting.

Thanks!

Hi there,

My name is Tobias, I'm looking for a floor to crash starting on Thursday, I have a sleeping bag. I'm respectful of people's property and I expect you to be too, i've had people steal my stuff before and know how it feels. I'm a college student right now from Michigan, I pay you money or do some barter thing if you like, I can write music amongst other things.

I just decided to go at the last minute. If you want to get to know me better just call me up: 248-506-3845 Call anytime, I don't care. If you guys are loud and like to party I can roll with that, if you guys are quiet and just like to get to bed early, I can work with that too.

REQUEST - 2m^2 sleeping area on a hotel room floor - I am quiet and trouble free, kick me out whenever you want (no replies)

I would like to borrow just a bit of room to sleep on a hotel room floor - one night or two. I need less than 2 square meters. I have a sleeping bag and can bring a pillow, towel and all other necessary items. I am willing to pay you and I promise to not get in your way. I am not a bum, I was just too late to register for a room at the hotel - all booked up.

I promise not to be a bit of trouble, and am very clean and noise free. I am into unix, OpenPGP (identity, crypto, and anon stuff), locksport, radio stuff (I am a General class Ham), filesystems, drum n bass, and greenhouse agriculture. I work and study at NC State Univ. in Agricultural and Biological engineering. Myself and Zip from our NC2600 group will be driving up and we didn't know how many people were going till the last minute and by then all the rooms were gone.

Interested to split? As little as one bit of floor for one of us for one night would be a super offer. If you could host two of us that would be great. We are both easy to get along with.

If you go for it and something doesn't work out - I am happy to leave at your request at any time. I promise not to wreck or steal any of your gear.

Name the price it would be worth to you.... If you are just one in a large room, we can make it better for both of us.

Send me an email if you think you'd be willing to help. Interview me and we can talk too. email: quietriot '@' 80d '.' org
Thanks!

So those who were at the jam session last year may remember that it was a little ... uncooperative. I liked the chaos, but a little more cooperation would have improved the output substantially.

Some ideas:

Someone could bring a sequencer so we'll all have something consistent to play along with. I'm working on a sequencer mode for the avrsyn -- hopefully it will be done in time.

We could play something alleatoric a la "In C". That way, everyone is on the same page but not quite.

We could try and create an entry for Blockparty. Or are most people already working on entries of their own?

Who's bringing what? I'm bringing the avrsyn like last year, though with updated firmware. I've also got a digital delay line in progress on breadboard to try out.

A couple people spotted me peddling off part of my junk collection this evening in the hallway. If you were there...you did notice that is all completely random stuff and I did manage to get rid of most of it. However, I do have a sizeable number of NIC's remaining(15 or more) that I would still like to get rid of to lighten the load on the way home. I was hoping for $2 a piece out of them...I have what I think is about 3 modems(think one is ISA, some are taped in a box which is why i add curiosity to the number) that I'm hoping to get $2(for all) out of. That's really about it. If you think for some reason that my prices are too high...feel free to inquire. I'll be scanning the forums for any responses before i leave tomorrow.

Just looked in the box again...i've got 2 DVDRW's and 4 CDRW's, most are memorex i think with actual cases. $2 for all 6

Just an added note on the NIC's and the modems. Most are pulled from computers that were given to me or any other various ways I can acquire computers through trades and whatnot. So...I can say that they all work but the price is quite right to me. I have had this box of NIC's around for a bit and each time i've pulled one to use in a server or something, I haven't been disappointed once. Most of them are CNET Pro 100 cards, some linksys, some network everywhere and a couple realtek's. I'm sure there are some others sprinkled and somebody stopped in to ask if I had any 3coms and that's a no. Feel free to inquire...as mentioned above. Thanks for looking! hopefully I can help somebody out and they can help me out :)

Therefore, if you're interested in taking either of these systems off my hands (free), please reply either in this thread or to dewey (at) thinkythings (dot) org. You have until Saturday morning to make up your mind.

The systems are as follows:

One PowerBook 540c. Floppy drive, no CD. Looks like it has a built-in modem and ethernet port, but the ethernet requires a special dongle to convert it to RJ-45.

One Macintosh LC 4MB RAM. It comes with a keyboard, mouse, 12" Apple monitor, and an external hard drive (150MB?). There's also a smaller internal hard drive (80 MB?). No ethernet on this guy.

Both systems boot up and have a minimal operating system installed. Both machines are in very good physical condition.

Let me know if you're interested in either system (or both). In the unlikely event that multiple people are interested, preference will go to the person who describes the coolest project they intend to do with this hardware.

Just combing through my bookmarks, I came across a number of sites that prospective AbE entrants might familiarize themselves with.

These folks make a bidirection ASCII<-->DTMF bridge board. Oh, the possibilities.

You know the RDS subcarrier data on FM broadcasts? Decoders are all over. Here's an encoder. Think Ramsey for the transmitter.

Cellsocket and Dock'n'Talk devices, bridge between POTS and cellular networks.

[amasci.com]
Bill Beatty's directory of suppliers. Every mad scientist should have catalogs from most of these outfits.

Spark Fun Electronics, makers of prototyping supplies and breakout boards for all sorts of nifty stuff. Small RF modules, rs232 level shifters, etc.

AutoHotKey is FOSS for remapping your keyboard and making macros. Also works with infrared receivers, hint hint.

Hyperlinktech and Demarctech both carry all sorts of wireless-related gadgetry. The renowned CM9 card isn't wifi, nota bene. And you've got to love Demarc's ATX PoE supply.

Optical encoder wheel pattern generator. If you're doing data over rotating shafts, this'll save you some time.

Just a couple ham radio-related pages to get the ideas flowing... There will be an automatic mega-bonus for any entry which achieves EME bounce and recovers the data.

That's all for now. Share your own resources! Post questions about the rules in the 'rules' thread.

Ham radio special event station! (no replies)

I'm working on setting up an amateur radio station for the con. I've got the callsign N4C for the duration of the con, an HF rig, an antenna, and some control hardware collected and mostly working. My intention is to show off some of the cool stuff that can be done with ham radio, particularly things that will appeal to geeks -- satellite communications, digital HF stuff, homebrew equipment, etc. It may even get worked into an Anything but Ethernet link.

Physical setup is something of a challenge, since the station's controls will probably be in the consuite. We're putting the antennas on the roof (as well as the radios, 'cuz I don't have 16 floors' worth of coax), so everything has to be remote-controlled. I've almost got the HF rig's control setup working, but I don't have a suitable UHF/VHF radio yet so I can't set that up.

I'm gonna need some help with hardware (like that VHF/UHF rig that I don't own), and lots of help running the station during the con (control operators wanted!). If you want to get involved, post here or email me at [my callsign]@notacon.org.
